Oliver Tree's Birth Chart Breakdown (Alien Boy Decoded)

Born a Cancer Sun, Scorpio Moon, and Sagittarius Rising, Oliver Tree Nickell came into this world on June 29, 1993, at 7:51 PM in Santa Cruz, California.

Oliver's Cancer Sun sits in the 7th House at 8 degrees, a Scorpio degree... this degree tells me he understood life’s darker side earlier than most due to a profound loss. And with his Sun in the 7th House, relationships going forward were a major part of how Oliver understood himself. His soul chose this house for a reason. He needed connection, he created home through love, and I think much of his identity was shaped by the people he cared about and the feeling of being needed by them. But Cancer carries a deep fear of abandonment, and I see traces of this in Oliver’s chart… loving intensely while still protecting part of himself, wanting closeness while keeping an escape route nearby. What strikes me, is how this seemed to soften as he got older. I sense he was becoming less afraid of being seen and more willing to let people into the parts of himself he once protected. You could see it happening through his work. There was more openness, more emotional exposure, as though he was slowly learning that vulnerability didn’t always have to end in loss.

Deep beneath that vulnerable Cancer Sun lived something much more intense, a First Quarter Moon in Scorpio conjunct Pluto in the 11th House. His Moon is at 19 degrees, a Libra and karmic debt degree, which tells me Oliver was working through past-life lessons about codependency and healing. The 11th House is supposed to be about belonging, about community, about finding your tribe. But Scorpio Moon in the 11th at 19 degrees can feel like an outsider, even in rooms full of people who love you. Pluto conjunct the Moon is fated intensity, every emotional connection becomes a life-changing experience. Friendships either overwhelmed him completely or destroyed him. He understood people at a supernatural level, sensing their deepest wounds before they spoke them, reading rooms like a psychic reads tarot. But that gift came with a price, he couldn't do casual. Every relationship demanded absolute honesty, complete vulnerability. 

However, the sextile from his Moon and Pluto to Retrograde Uranus and Neptune in the 1st House and the sign of Capricorn gave him something notable, the ability to channel that psychological intensity into revolutionary art and turn it into a unique brand. His 1st house placements also governed how he appeared to the world, he had cosmic permission to be completely weird. Uranus is rebellion and innovation. Neptune is illusion and mystery. Together in the 1st House, they created someone whose appearance was deliberately strange, deliberately mysterious, deliberately not normal.

Oliver’s Sagittarius Rising at 29 degrees is a force to be reckoned with… 29 degrees is an anaretic and Leo degree, the degree of fame and lessons learned through visibility. The 29th degree is the final degree of a sign, the most intense expression of that sign's energy. Sagittarius is the explorer and the risk-taker who believes in possibility even when evidence suggests otherwise. At 29 degrees, his ascendant becomes fearless. Oliver performed absolute authenticity… he made people laugh while he was hurting, and he pushed boundaries that others wouldn't dare touch. He refused to hide. He had the kind of courage that made people want to break their own rules. But this ascendant (rising) is sextile Retrograde Saturn in Pisces in the 2nd House at 0 degrees (a degree that enhances Piscean dissolution and spiritual confusion). Saturn is the planet of worthiness, of deserving. In Pisces, it's spiritually confused, questioning whether you deserve success. Retrograde means Oliver was working through deep karmic patterns about his own value. So we have his Sagittarius Rising's fearless confidence, but his Saturn’s self-doubt. However, a sextile is a gift, and I have no doubt Oliver would have overcome this insecurity if he had lived. Even using it to help others.

Going back to his Sun, it is square his Jupiter in Libra and the 9th house at 5 degrees (another fame and Leo degree, but a fame with a cost degree). A square is tension and friction. I sense Oliver believed in love on an intellectual level, he could speak about it beautifully, philosophically, but emotionally, he couldn't trust it. He wanted the perfect partnership, but I believe he sabotaged it when it got too close (a recurring theme in his chart: fear of love). His Mercury in Cancer at 28 degrees (a Cancer degree and another fame degree) in the 7th House meant his words became household wisdom, his vulnerability became his brand. But Cancer Mercury never stops. It replays conversations endlessly, and searches for hidden meanings in every word. His brilliant mind understood human psychology more than any of us know, and that understanding became the foundation of his art. Then comes my favorite placement of Oliver’s… his Venus in Taurus at 23 degrees, an Aquarius degree, in the 5th House. This is such a devoted Venus, especially when it comes to what he created and loved. In the 5th House, that devotion went into his art, but I also think it says something about the father he might have been if he’d had children. Venus in Taurus usually loves through physical affection and being present. I think he would have been deeply attached to his kids and protective of the life he built around them. We already saw this devotion in his relationship with his art. Oliver kept creating in his own way, without molding himself around whatever was popular at the time. His Venus was also conjunct the Fixed Star Zaurak, adding another layer to how personally he expressed affection and connected with people. I imagine his romantic partners and collaborators experienced a side of him that the public only caught glimpses of. There was permanence in this Venus. When Oliver loved something, whether a person, his art, or perhaps the children he never got the chance to have, he wanted it to matter. Even if he was fearful of that love.

His Mars in Virgo at 3 degrees, a Gemini degree, in the 8th House shows his drive, the will he had to push forward. But Virgo Mars is the perfectionist, the one who works tirelessly, and who demands excellence. The 8th House can represent death, and things beyond our control, the psychological depths. Mars in the 8th is bold, willing to venture into dangerous territory, to explore darkness that most people avoid. Oliver could work endlessly, push himself further than anyone else. But opposite that Retrograde Saturn, there's that impossible tension that defined his life… a continuous drive meets profound self-doubt. Every time his Mars pushed forward to create, Saturn pulled back once again. The harder he worked, the more Saturn kept nagging in the background, "it’s still not enough." I sense he was running on fumes while convincing himself he was invincible. The 8th House Mars doesn't know when to stop.

As most of us know by now, Oliver died in a helicopter crash in Brazil. I want to be gentle about this, but his chart does point to this ending. His Sag Ascendant at 29 degrees, that anaretic degree, is the most intense expression of Sagittarius energy… think of the belief in possibility, a refusal to accept limits, willingness to take risks without hesitation. Combined with Mars in Virgo in the 8th House opposite Retrograde Saturn in Pisces in the 2nd, you have someone who pushes relentlessly into dangerous territory (Mars in the 8th). At the same time, Saturn whispers confusion about whether consequences even apply (Retrograde Saturn in Pisces). The 8th House governs death and things beyond our control. His Jupiter is also key here. The 5th degree is a fame degree, but more importantly, it's the degree of fame at a cost. This placement brought Oliver recognition and visibility, but every accomplishment carried a cost. The 9th House governs travel, foreign lands, belief systems, and philosophy. Oliver's Jupiter in the 9th at this degree squaring his Sun (which can represent our physical health and life force) points toward injury or an accident abroad. RIP our Alien boy.
